Katha Upanishad 1.2.12
Sanskrit
नायमात्मा प्रवचनेन लभ्यो न मेधया न बहुना श्रुतेन...nayam atma pravacanena labhyo na medhaya na bahuna srutena...
Translation
The Self is not attained by instruction, nor by intellect, nor by much hearing. It is attained only by the one whom the Self chooses.
Explanation
This verse from the Katha Upanishad points to the paradoxical nature of Self-realization — it cannot be achieved through conventional means of acquisition. All study, practice, and inquiry are necessary but not sufficient; ultimately there is a moment of grace in which the Self reveals itself. This teaching is meant to cultivate humility and surrender rather than discourage effort.
Life Application
Continue your practice with sincere effort, but hold the effort lightly. The destination is not something you manufacture — it is what you already are, waiting to be recognized.
